Some physiological and biochemical changes were studied in the top three leaves of field-grown hybrid rice cv. Shanyou 6 from flowering through senescence. The initial symptoms of leaf senescence were a decline in photosynthesis and protein content, then a decrease in chlorophyll and RNA contents, and the ultimate change was a loss of selective permeability of protoplasm. In the early stage of leaf senescence, some new peroxidase isozyme bands could be observed, and the dry weight of plant and panicles were increased obviously, while the leaf blades, culms and sheaths were decreased apparently. It was demonstrated that the top three leaves of the canopy in hybrids rice showed a sequential pattern of senescence and material remobilization between leaves and grain
