The effects of light intensity, supplemental irrigation, and insect control on the grain yield of maize (Zea mays L.)

The effects of light intensity, supplemental irrigation and insect control (using Furadan, a systemic insecticide) on the grain yield of a variety of maize, composite 4, in Ghana is reported. Three planting dates, beginning of April, end of April and end of May were used. The first planting received the highest mean total incoming solar radiation during its growth period but its yield was less than that of the second planting. The efficacy of the insecticide was more pronounced where no supplemental irrigation was applied. Supplemental irrigation significantly increased yield but drought at flowering delayed silking especially in the non-irrigated plots. Water is a major limiting factor for grain yield than light intensity in the coastal savanna zone of Ghana
