The effect of topping, spacing and pruning on the crop duration, fruit yield and quality of tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill)
1977
Djietror, G.A.
The effect of topping, spacing and pruning on fruit yield, quality and crop duration of two varieties of tomato, Owusu-Bioh and Prolific stoner was evaluated. Topping significantly reduced yield/plant. Topping and pruning interaction affected yield/plant in Owusu-Bioh but not in Prolific Stoner. Close spacing, separately or combined with topping increased yield/ha considerably but not significantly. Topping progressively shortened crop duration. Where growing season does not exceed 100 days, the Owusu-Bioh variety should be topped leaving only the first two trusses on the plant at a spacing of 50 cm x 30 cm to give satisfactory yield
