Effect of defoliation on grain yield of maize (Zea mays L.)
1976
Briandt-Quao, D.
Mexican 17, a white grained, rust resistant maize variety was defoliated below the eighth upper leaves in early, medium and late treatments at two, four and five weeks after 50% anthesis. Only early defoliation significantly reduced grain yield. Removal of leaves four and five weeks after anthesis did not reduce grain yield indicating that the leaves became photosynthetically ineffective well in advance of grain maturity. Grain yields could be increased if the leaves remained photosynthetically active for a longer period of time
