Evaluation of egg plant (Solanum melongena L.) breeding lines
1984
Ofosu-Budu, K.G.
The performance of seven F3 lines from a cross between egg-plant varieties, Peto 90-73 and Black Beauty were evaluated alongside Black Beauty. All lines of the crosses flowered earlier than Black Beauty and showed significant differences in early fruit maturity, seed content, pedicle length and number of fruits/plant. Very high positive correlation between mean height at first flowering, mean number of days from sowing to first flowering, mean primary branches at first flowering, mean number of days from sowing to first fruit maturity and yield were observed. Violet fruited parents segregated into predominantly violet, striped (violet and green) and green, while green fruited parents did not segregate but produced green fruits. Incomplete dominance of violet green and control of fruit colour by more than one gene with cumulative effect, are indicated
