The effect of cold treatment on bulbing and flowering in onions and shallots (Allium cepa)
1988
Doe, E.W.
The effect of cold treatment, for varying periods on bulbing and flowering of four Allium cepa varieties, Bawku Red, Texas Grano, Kwahu, and Anloga shallots were studied. The treatment combinations were studied. The treatment combination were 0-2 deg C for 45, 25, 20 and 6 days, -4 +- 0.5 deg C for 48, 24 and 12 hrs. Sprouting was enhanced in the cold treated onions. Cold treatment 0-2 deg C for 20 days resulted in the production of the highest number of leaves while the lowest number was recorded in the control. The mean number of plantlets, bulblets, bulb size, and total yield were highest for 0-2 deg C for 25 days. Cold treatments and period combinations were not effective in inducing flowering in the non-flowering varieties
