Laboratory and field testing of insecticides against army-worm, Spodoptera frugiperda S. and A. and a technique for low-volume drift spraying of paddy for its control
1969
Rai, B.K.
Data on the comparative direct contact toxicity of 35 insecticides to the caterpillars of S. frugiperda are presented. Of these, fenitrothion was the most toxic. In 2 field trials, one showed fenitrothion to be effective even at a dosage of 120 gm a.i./ha on 5-week-old paddy while on one-month-old paddy, control was obtained by application at 168 gm a.i. in 3.7 litres of spray fluid/ha. Based on further trials, fenitrothion is being recommended at 170 gm a.i./ha for paddies up to 4 weeks old and at 225 gm a.i./ha for older paddies. By resorting to drift spraying and with suitable low volume attachment to the motorized knapsack sprayer, it is possible to treat one hectare of paddy in 21 minutes
