Biological study and comparative toxicity of some insecticides in the lab. and field to the southern cowpea weevil callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Bruchidae; Coleoptera) and the parasite Anisopteromalus Calandrae (How.) (Pteromalidae; Hymenoptera)

A study of the biological development of the southern cowpea weevil C. maculatus and the ectoparasite A. calandrae on the 3rd and the 4th larval instars and the pupal stage of the C. maculatus, revealed that life cycle of the weevil is decreased with increased temperature and relative humidity(RH), and the 70 percent RH had an effect on the longivity of the adult males as compared with the females; the average developmental period from the egg to the adult stage of A. calandrae at 30 deg C and 50 percent RH was 13.4 days. Investigating the toxicity of nine insecticides found that organophosophorus insecticides Dursban, Nogos, Actellic, Supracide, mixture of Nogos and Dursban, Sumithion and Malathion were highly effective than the carbamate Sumicidine and the pyrethrin Sevin; the field spraying operations showed that Supracide was the most effective among the best five organophosphorus insecticides used, and when comparing the LD50 value and disappearance of residue of each insecticide the results showed that while Nogos residue was only 5 days as compared to 23 days for Suracide
