Eleven species of fungi were isolated and identified from six selected varieties, Alternaria alternata and Cladosporium sphaerospermum were the most dominant fungi which were apparently associated with the prevailing weather conditions such as rainfall (high relative humidity). Eight species were isolated and identified from date stored at -3 deg C and 75% R.H., Cladosporium herbarum and Penicillium sp. were the most common ones. It was found that the difference in variety infection by these fungi was directly correlated with moisture content of the varieties. An increase of fungi growth was observed in the medium containing date syrup instead of sucrose, which might be one of the reasons that explain the abundance of storage fungi on date friuts
