Rate of nitrogen mineralization or mineral N supplied by soil as a function of time is often needed to predict N fertilizer requirements of crops. The objective of this study was to determine the ability of different soils in the Chaouia region of Morocco to mineralize organic N. Soil samples were incubated for 16 weeks under optimum moisture and temperature and N sub (0) and k were determined for each soil. Soils of the region had N sub (0)'s ranging from 120 to 240 mg/g and k values ranging from 0.06 to 0.274/week. The lowest average N sub (0) value for different soils was shown to occur in Palexerolls which are shallow soils (35 cm) that have received very low N input
