Tamjinbyeo was developed from a cross between HR1591-43-4-2-1-2-4 (Milyang 20/Asominori) and HR1590-92-4-4-4-4 (HR769/Asominori) at Honam Crop Experiment Station, Rural Development Administration in 1988. Its heading date is about 2 and 4 days later than that of Nagdongbyeo and Daecheongbyeo in ordinary culture, respectively. It has an improved plant type with intermediate stature. It is more resistant to lodging than Dongjinbyeo, Nagdongbyeo and Chucheongbyeo because of its stiffness in stem. The culm length, the panicle length, the number of spikelets and the grain shape of Tamjinbyeo are similar to those of Nagdongbyeo. Meanwhile it has larger grain size and heavier 1000 grain weight than Nagdongbyeo. Grain of Tamjinbyeo is translucent and clear in chalkiness, and its eating quality is comparable to that of Chucheongbyeo. It is resistant to pathotype 1 of bacterial leaf blight, and moderate resistant to blast and stripe virus diseases, but susceptible to dwarf virus, black-streaked dwarf virus disease and insect pests. The yield potential of Tamjinbyeo is higher than that of Daecheongbyeo under normal fertilizer level. It is adaptable to the single cropping area in the southern part of Korea
