Silicagel (60 H mesh and 60-120 mesh) and light mineral oil were used to investigate their control effects on the cowpea beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus F. The results showed that the Silica gel (60 H mesh), and mineral oil were more effective. The % productivity of insects reared on cowpea seeds treated with Silicagel (60 H mesh), mineral oil and untreated were 14.34, 1.32 and 71.17% respectively. The percentage of damage of cowpea seeds treated with Silicagel (60 H) and mineral oil were 1.90 and 0.30% respectively, and was 89.5% for control. The percentage of weight loss in treated seeds with Silicagel (60 H) and mineral oil were 0.19 and 0.22% respectively, and 23.42% for untreated. The mineral oil was more effective for seed protection (about 99%) than other treatments. The treatment with mineral oil had no adverse effects on seed germination up to 40 days after treatment
