Production efficiency of corn-legume intercrop as influenced by crop combinations and planting arrangements [Philippines]

The height of corn plants intercropped with soybean was significantly higher than corn with cowpea. Corn plants intercropped with mungbean or peanut were comparable in height with corn intercropped with either soybean or cowpea. Corn intercropped with legume was significantly taller than monoculture. The ear diameter of corn intercropped with mungbean was wider than those with cowpea or soybean while ear length and the number of kernels per year were the same in all treatments. The 1000 seeds weight was not affected by the intercropped legume but the seeds were bigger at alternate row planting paired rows of legumes or alternate hills of corn and legume. Corn intercropped with either mungbean or peanut had higher yield than those with cowpea. Planting arrangement did not influence the yield of corn. The height of the intercropped legumes (soybeans and peanut) was significantly higher than planted alone, whereas intercropped mungbean and cowpea was comparable. The seeds of intercropped cowpea and soybean in all planting arrangements were significantly smaller than those in monoculture. However, the seeds of intercropped mungbean and peanut were comparable with those in monoculture. The largest population in paired rows produced the highest yield. Paired row planting had the highest LER followed by alternate rows and alternate within row. All intercrops had higher net return, than those monoculture except for corn and peanut combination.
