Sethoxydim: an effective herbicide against Rottboellia cochinchinensis and other grasses in field legumes in the Philippines

The efficacy of various rates and two formulations of sethoxydim against grass weeds dominated by Rottboellia cochinchinensis (Lour.) Clayton in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) was evaluated at the Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center [Philippines] from January to May 1986. Sethoxydim EC at 1.0 to 2.0 kg/ha and sethoxydim S at 1.0 to 1.5 kg/ha excellently controlled R. cochinchinensis and other grasses in soybean without phytotoxicity to the crop. Sethoxydim EC + oil (tank mixed) at a reduced rate of 0.75 kg/ha provided excellent control similar to that provided by sethoxydim EC at 2.0 kg/ha. Regardless of formulation and rate, sethoxydim provided a more superior control than pendimethalin or off-barring and hilling-up. Application of sethoxydim EC + oil at 0.75 + 2.5 and 1.5 + 2.5 gave the highest yield at 1.44 t/ha; these were comparable to those of handweeded plots (1.1 t/ha). All plots treated with sethoxydim regardless of rate and formulation gave significantly better yield than those treated with pendimethalin which yielded 0.54 t/ha. In this experiment, the unweeded plots obtained yields of 0.19 t/ha.
