Effect of stage of growth and genotype on the nutritive values of the forage from five oat cultivars that differ in protein content in the grain

It was found that Goodland cultivar that had the highest grain crude protein content appeared to be somewhat superior to other cultivars in most measurements which indicate forage nutritive value. It had a better rating than the mean in nearly every case, either with crude fiber fraction analyses of Van Soest or with in vitro digestion studies of Tilley and Terry and in vitro digestion trial using Saanen goats. In boot stage, Goodland cultivar had cell wall content of 58.2 % (the mean value of the 5 cultivars was 58.0%), the lignin content of Goodland was 3.90% (the mean value of the 5 cultivars was 3.87%), the in vitro dry matter digestibility of Goodland was 73.60% (the mean value of the 5 cultivars was 70.14%). The milk stage, the contents and value of the mentioned items of Goodland were 63.30% (mean value of cultivar 65.38%), 5.7% (mean value of 5 cultivars 6.11%), and 52.00% (mean value of 5 cultivars 50.88%), respectively. In the dough stage, the contents and value of the mentioned items were 55.4% (mean value of 5 cultivars 60.22%), 5.41% (mean value of five cultivars 5.87%), and 57.80% (mean value of 5 cultivars 53.98%), respectively. In the boot stage, the digestibility of dry matter (in vitro), cellulose and hemi-cellulose of Goodland was 60.40% (mean value of 5 cultivars 59.64%), 59.8% (mean value of 5 cultivars 57.1%), and 61.0% (mean value of 5 cultivars 59.8%).
