Body weight gain (BWG), food efficiency rate (FER), protein efficiency rate (PER), gastrocnemius muscle and liver weight, protein content, and RNA:DNA ratio as well as protein synthesis capacity (PSC) along with other metabolic parameters, of both gastrocnemius muscle and liver were measured in rats (80-90 g initial body weight) fed ad libitum for 12 days on 18.8% protein diets containing either casein (5% of methionine added; control) or the raw faba bean (Vicia faba L.) as the sole sources of protein. It was found that, as compared to casein-fed rats, those fed the legume diet exhibited a significant reduction (P0.05) in BWG, FER, PER, liver RNA:DNA, and muscle and liver PSC. These results indicated that feeding growing rats a raw faba diet brings about a significant reduction in the rate of protein synthesis both in muscle and liver
