Need and scope for breeding sorghums for promoting whole-plant utilization, and fitting different season-lengths using novel germplasm

Need and scope for (1) growing sorghum genotypes of appropriate durations to suit either marginal or better environments other than those represented by most of the all-India test sites, (ii) restructuring sorghum plant, especially with respect to dry matter production and partitioning, and (iii) accumulation of sugars in the culm for promoting alternate and whole plant utilization, are described. The availability of novel germplasm for these purposes, and the need for using the insight gained from better assessments of agroclimatic potential of different regions for efficient varietal deployment are highlighted. Quantitative assessment of biomass production potential of individual regions based on analysis of long-term climatic data, and simulation modeling are also illustrated. Matching crop phenology to the characteristics of the target environments, and greater attention to both early and late maturity genotypes than those currently used are emphasised.
