This paper briefly describes the role of the State of Parana in Brazilian national wheat production and the Parana Agronomic Institute Foundation (IAPAR) wheat breeding activities; main activities are concentrated in a project that emphasizes obtaining advanced lines with higher yield potential and stability of production, resistance to diseases and adverse environmental conditions, and acceptable nutritional and baking quality. The most important characteristics of wheat breeding in Parana are presented, as well as a brief discussion of the methodology developed to reach breeding aims, and the collaborative work performed between CIMMYT and IAPAR
