Some highlights of sweet corn (Zea mays var. Saccharata Sturt.) research conducted in the Faculty of Agriculture since 1979

Evaluation studies were conducted on imported cultivars of which many had consistently produced 2 marketable ears per plant. Breeding work has resulted in the development of the new synthetic cultivar known as UW7, that gives yields of over 35,000 marketable ears per hectare. Experiments have shown that a plant density of 40000-50000 plants per hectare could result in optimum yields. Fertilizer studies indicated that acceptable yields of high quality market ears were produced on River Estate loam with application of 60 kg N/ha, 20 kg P2O5/ha and 50 kg K2O/ha followed by band side dressing of 60 kg N/ha 4 weeks later. Good weed control can be achieved by pre-emergence combination of atrazine (1.0) and alachlor (2.0) and alachlor (2.0) and metribuzin (0.6)
