One hundred and five lactations of 48 crossbred dairy cows were monitored for the first three lactations. 41 (85.4 %) of the animals had completed a second lactation, while 16 (33.3 %) completed their third lactation. For the 105 lactations, the mean lactation yield was 1306 850.7 kg in 192.0 79.4 days. 13(12.4 %) lactations were between 0 and 100 days, 41 (39.0 %) were between 101 and 200 days while 48(45.7 %) lactations were over 200 days. Mean lactation yields of 1068.3 772.3, 1662.7 918.4 and 1442 581.9 kg were observed for lactations 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The efficiency of production as indicated by production (kg) per head per day in lactation was 5.9 2.1, 7.3 +-2.1 and 6.8 +- 2.0. With each period the variations in lactation length and yield were 36, 17 and 14 % respectively and 80, 38 and 30 % respectively. Mean lactation lengths of 166.6 85.3, 215.2 +- 74.2, and 208.9 +- 49.0 days, were recorded for lactations 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Observations of the variation in lactation length, yield and efficiency of production indicated that variation was highest for lactations that lasted for between 0-100 days
