Milk production, whole lactation studies on sugarcane feeding systems

6 dairy trials were carried out to determine the effects of feeding sugar cane based diets. In the first trial, DI, commercial dairy ration containing 20 % crude protein (CP), was compared with a 40/40 supplement which consisted of 40 % CP and 40 % of its total nitrogen coming from non-protein nitrogen. In the DII trial, a supplement containing 20 % CP was fed together with an additional quantity of soybean meal. These 2 trials showed adequate levels of milk production on supplemented sugar cane diets and that milk production on such feeding regimes can be economic. The third trial, DIII, was conducted to determine the effect of feeding lactating dairy cattle at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 times supplementary energy levels so as to develop a more precise feeding value (net energy value) for sugar cane forage. From the results of these 3 trials, the effect of the level of sugar cane in the diet dry matter intake on milk yield was delineated. The fourth trial, DIV, was designed to determine the effect of phase feeding group-fed cattle with sugar cane based diets formulated for different stages of lactation. The yields obtained in this trial were good and the nitrogen provided by the 40/40 supplement was effectively utilized by the animals due to the adequate levels of readily available fermentable carbohydrate provided in the diet. In the DV trial, dried leucaena forage was used in the diets to replace 0, 50 and 100 % of the CP contributed by soyabean meal (SBM), whereas in the DVI trial, poultry byproduct meal was used as the major CP source. The CP from leucaena forage can replace that of SBM feeds in diets for dairy cattle, 50 % displacement gave higher yields than 100 % displacement of SBM. In the DVI trial the poultry byproduct meal depressed the lactation performance and milk fat levels
