An overview of forage trials conducted by CARDI in Dominica
1988

Several field trials were conducted by CARDI since 1983 to evaluate various forage grasses, legumes and grass/legume combinations for productivity, nutritive value, seasonality, optimal management and persistence. In the first field trial, 10 combinations of grasses and legumes were tested. Elephant and Signal grass produced the highest total forage dry matter yields of 21.7 t/ha. In the second experiment, comparison of broadcasting and shallow sowing of 4 legume species was carried out on 2 farms. At Farm 1, with relatively low legume population, the sown plots had significantly greater weed population and poorer legume performance than broadcast treatment. On the second farm, the legume population was higher and the trend was reversed. A-year round production study of Pennisetum purpureum based on 2 to 3 months regrowth gave average monthly fresh forage yields of 77 t/ha and 57 t/ha at the wetter and drier site respectively
