Productivity of traditionally managed small ruminants in an agro-pastoral system in Northern Burkina Faso
1987
Wilson, R.T. (International Livestock Centre for Africa, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia))
Results of a 2-year survey of indigenous sheep and goats are reported. Mean age at first parturition was 446 and 455 days for sheep and goats respectively. Litter sizes were 1.02 and 1.21 and intervals between successive births 274 and 291 days for sheep and goats respectively. Parity in goats significantly affected litter size. Annual reproductive rates of sheep in Burkina Faso (1.36) were inferior compared to Mali (1.56), but this was not true of goats. Reproductive performance and seasonal pattern of weight change indicate that considerable stress occurs in both species during the dry season
