Effects of fertilizer nitrogen and biological nitrogen on the yield and quality of two types of forages

In field experiments at Chaguaramas, Trinidad, three levels of fertilizer (urea) 100 kg N/ha per year, 200 kg N/ha per year and 400 kg N/ha per year were applied to tanner grass (Brachiaria arrecta) and compared with the introduction of the legume Centrosema pubescens in the sward. The effects of added P and K were also studied. There was no significant difference in yield between the 2 N sources and increased rate of N application did not increase yield, protein content or nitrogen uptake of the grass, presumably because N was not a limiting factor in the sward. The soil physical characteristics, a gravel lens in the soil profile which affected water relations, and the climatic conditions were the factors limiting yield. Presence of the legume in the sward increased its quality (N content), and added P and K improved the protein content of the legume
