Some aspects of crop/livestock production in eastern Caribbean: a review

Reviews livestock and pasture improvement work conducted in the eastern Caribbean under the FSR/D programme of CARDI. In Barbados, feed resource studies showed cassava can replace 25 and 40 % of corn in broiler starter and finisher rations respectively and 100 % of corn in pig starter. Peanut and sweet potato tops were identified as livestock feeds in St. Vincent. In the area of forage production and development, indigenous and introduced grass and forage legume species had been identified for improved pasture management. Under an integrated production system, the livestock management system was introduced to Dominica. The cut and carry forage approach was the main feature of this system. A similar model was set up in the Roseau Valley Dairy Project. Improved rams were introduced into St. Vincent and St. Lucia, while deworming of sheep at 6 to 8 week intervals has kept internal parasites at manageable levels. Suggestions are made as to the direction of future work
