The investigation in 1981 showed that the intensive use of nitrogen fertilizers caused large accumulation of ammonium and nitrate nitrogen in some soils of the Podrinje-Kolubara region (Yugoslavia) especially in orchard areas. The accumulated contents were greater than the plants need and therefore they presented a risk for the pollution of soil. High contents of available forms of phosphorus and potassium were also found while the surplus of these elements could, among other things, cause the pollution and eutrophication of water. Samples of water contained high contents of the investigated elements (N,P,K).
