Compatible grafts showed a rapid increase in the number of xylem and phloem stands reaching a peak in the early stages of growth followed by a significant decrease. In contrast, the number of connections increased in the later stages of growth. In incompatible grafts, however, connections were not formed. Phloem although produced significantly higher number of strands than that of xylem the pattern of xylem and phloem differentiation in either compatible or incompatible graft was found to be similar.
