Comparative efficiencies of zinc oxide, zincoxisulfate and zinc sulfate on the growth of maize [in Bangladesh]

A pot experiment was conducted in the premises of the Department of Soil science, University of Dhaka to evaluate the comparative response of corn (Zea mays L.) to different Zinc sources viz. Zinc oxide, Zincoxisulfate and zinc sulfate in two representative soils, Saver Soil (Noadda series) and Madhabdi soil (Sonatola series) of Bangladesh. N, P and K were added at 10 kg Zn/ha from different sources. The treatments were replicated four times in a completely randomised design for each of the two soils. Dry weight at knee-height, tasseling and harvesting stage increased significantly with Zinc oxisulfate in comparison to the control. The relative efficiencies of the sources were in the sequence of Zn2OSO4 ZnSo ZnO. Zinc phosphorus interaction made some physiological antagonism and plant might suffer Zn and P deficiency. Nitrogen had no profound influence on the availability of Zn but on addition to Zn the N uptake increased. From this investigation it can be concluded that Zincoxisulfate as zinc source may be used to cultivate maize on the soil of similar kind.
