Tow root characteristics associated with drought avoidance mechanisms, viz. root xylem vessel number and area of one African upland variety, two Hill rices and one Aus variety of Bangladesh were studied under hydroponic culture at the IRRI Phytotron glass house in 1976, to study the varietal differences and to find out the maximum growth occurrence of those traits. The varietal differences for vessel number and area were observed at 20 days after sowing. Upland variety and hill rices had larger size and higher number of root xylem vessels than those of lowland Aus variety. The maximum growth of those traits occurred at around 45 days after sowing.
