Phosphorus availability and pH changes in the rhizosphere of rice, maize, soybean and jute

Phosphorus availability and pH changes as influenced by the rhizosphere soil of rice (transplanted and upland), maize, soybean and jute were studied at their different stages of growth under field conditions. The rhizosphere soil of all crop species maintained higher level of available phosphorus than non-rhizosphere. The efficiency of different crop species in maintaining available P in the rhizosphere were in the order, upland rice maize olitorius jute transplanted rice soybean capsularis jute no- rhizosphere (without crop). In changing the pH, soybean and transplanted rice decreased the PH of the rhizosphere soil over that of non-rhizosphere soil, where as olitorius jute increased. Capsularis jute, maize and upland rice did not significantly affect the soil pH and available P was significant. This indicated that the effect of crop species and the sequence of species differences Varied with the stages of growth.
