A crossing programme was initiated for developing chickpea strains with larger seed size, higher protein content and higher seed yield. The mutant variety Hyprosola contains higher protein in the seeds than its parental cultivar, Faridpur-1 and is also higher yielding. Faridpur-1 has bigger seed size than Hyprosola. Twenty three plant progeny lines (F4) were grown for preliminary assessment of seed protein content and seed yield. A total of nines produced bigger seed size than the bold seeded parent, Faridpur-1. However, not much of difference was observed among the lines for seed yield. Proper yield trials with adequate plot size will be necessary for final assessment of the yield potential of the strains.
