A comparative study between three safflower sources (Carthamus tinctoria Willy) named, Egyptian, Swiss and Portuguese was carried out during 1985 and 1986 seasons at the experimental farm of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Section of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dokki, Egypt. The results indicated that Portuguese safflower gave the highest values as compared to Swiss or Egyptian safflowers in plant height, number of branches and fruits per plant, weight of florets per flower, per plant and per plot, weight of one fruit and its seeds, yield of fruits and seeds per plant and per plot, weight of 1000 seeds and oil content in 10 gm. of seeds. On the contrary B carotene in Portuguese safflower was lower than Egyptian or Swiss sources. Therefore, it could be recommended to introduce Portuguese safflower in Egyptian cultivation instead of the local variety
