The effects of price and credit on food security in Ghana

Two major food crops, maize and rice were used to examine the effects of changes in food prices and credit facilities on food security in Ghana, the assumption being that the response by maize farmers to price and credit changes is indicative of the response of other food crop farmers. Price and credit are important variables determining maize and rice production. Maize farmers respond to price and credit changes significantly but rice farmers do not appear to respond in like manner. Price and credit levels have to be increased, in addition to production subsidies and buffer stock schemes, to ensure food security
