Consumption and utilization of food plants by the cotton [Gossypium] leaf-roller, Sylepta derogata (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera-Pyralidae)
1980
Kpiebaareh, M.M.
The effect of consumption and utilization of okra and cotton on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th instar larvae of the cotton leaf-roller Sylepta derogata was determined in a laboratory experiment. Consumption index, apparent digestibility, efficiency of conversion of ingested food into body material and efficiency of conversion of digested food into body substance were influenced by the host plant, but host plant had no effect on pre- and post-oviposition periods as well as longevity. Consumption index increased with age of larva, approximate digestibility was higher but decreased with age of larva for okra. Larval periods and fecundity of larva were shorter on okra than on cotton and positive correlation existed between pupal weight and number of eggs laid
