The effect of grain reserves on food security in Ghana
1988
Debre, L.R.A.
The effect of grain reserves on food security in Ghana from 1981-1987 is discussed. The major cereals used in the study are maize, rize, millet and guinea corn. Ghana has never been selfsufficient in grain production but showed highest level (96 %) of self sufficiency in 1984. The trend of grain/cereal prices showed fluctuating pattern, higher instability being shown by wholesale prices which is attributable to inflationary factors. Even though a grain reserve system is beneficial to the country, there has never enough surplus to effect such a system which can only be feasible when production is stepped up above the present level
