Effect of Plant density on grain protein content of Maize (Zea mays L.)

Four single maize hybrids: PR-3183, NSC-4-702, PR-3780 and PR-3901 with a FAO index of 800, 700, 500 and 350 respectively, were tested in four plant densities of 55.500, 70.000, 83.500, and 99.000 plants/ha during 1982 and 1983 in Thessaloniki, Arta and Xanthi, in order to study the plant density effect on yield and protein content of maize. There were statistically significant differences in grain yield and protein content between regions, hybrids and population densities, Arta giving the highest grain yield and protein content. The hybrids PR-3183 and NSC-4-702 were more productive than those of shorter biological cycle (PR-3780 and PR-3901), but they had the lowest protein content of the grains. Increase in plant density from 55.500 to 99.000 plants/ha, resulted in a grain yield increase. A plateau in yield was attained at a plant density level of 83.500 plants/ha. Further increase in density did not affect grain yields. Grain protein content was decreased by increase in plant density. This decrease observed above the density of 55.500 plants/ha in Cereal Institute, while in Arta, observed above the density of 83.500 plants/ha. Thus, for hybrids PR-3183, NSC-4-702, and PR-3901 the best plant density was 83.500 plants/ha, while for PR-3901 99.000 plants/ha. Also with respect to the regions, Thessaloniki, Arta (1983) and Xanthi the density of 83.500 plants/ha gave the highest yield and Arta (1982) 99.000 plants/ha. The interaction effect of "location X hybrid" on grain protein content was statistically singificant which showed that the hybrids studied did not behave similarly with respect to their grain protein content in the regions in the present work
