This paper presents a mathematical model which is suitable for the description of integrated ecological - productive systems, with particular application to systems involving aquaculture. The proposed model is a dynamic, compartmental one and consists of 14 compartments corresponding to 14 differential equations. To quantify the 55 interaction terms, which describe the flows of mass and energy between the various compartments and the systems's environment, four types of equations are introduced. The use of such a model, in combination with the appropriate constraints, makes possible the bio-economic analysis of the systems and, particularly, the selection of an optimal management policy
