The cytological and histological aspects of the origin of callus and embryoid were observed in the cultured anthers of Daecheongbyeo (Japonica type) and Milyang 23 (Tongil type). Viable S pollen grains were investigated with Evans-blue staining. The S pollen grains around anther wall were largely divided into the multicellular pollen grains. They attached to anther wall or degenerated pollen grains and developed into calli or embryoids. Embryoid formation from 2-4 celled proembryoids with fibrillar wall or multicellular pollen grains with compact structure was closely related with the break of pollen extine and anther wall. But proembryoids and multicellular pollen grains mostly developed into callus because of growth regulator. Plant regeneration through embryogenesis was mostly observed in Milyang 23. The number of viable S pollen grains in Daecheongbyeo with high sporophytic potential was significantly higher than in Milyang 23
