A new rye variety "Chochunhomil" was developed by Wheat and Barley Research Institute, Rural Development Administration in 1988. One population, reselected for earliness from the foreign variety "Vita graze" introduced from USA in 1979, was multiplied during 3 years in Wheat and Barley Research Institute, before conducting Yield Performance Trial for 2 years from 1983 to 1984, and Regional Performance Trial for 3 years from 1985 to 1987, and named it "Chochunhomil" as a new recommended variety of rye. The variety "Chochunhomil" has very similar characteristics with the most popular rye variety in Korea, Paldanghomil, which has winter hardiness, earliness, disease resistance, and wet soil tolerance. This new variety showed one day earlier heading date, 8% more grain yield, 4% more forage yield, 7% more dry matter in the Regional Performance Trial and 14% more forage yield in commercial livestock farm than those of Paldanghomil, respectively. This variety, showing good forage production in early spring from late April to early May especially, can be recommended in both upland and paddy field area all over the country except Cheju province.
