Tubers of different varieties of potato namely: Fina, Berolina, Ilona, Univeta, Cosima and Red Pontiac were used in this study. Treatment of the tubers with 4 to 8 ppm GA3 promoted earlier sprouting of the buds, caused excessive elongation of the shoots, and reduced the ABA content of the sprouts. Application of maleic hydrozide (MH) to the previously sprouted tubers retarded sprout growth, caused shrivelling of the tubers, and stimulated the production of ABA resulting to the browning and drying of the shoots. Pretreatment of the tubers with 8 ppm GA3 prior to MH treatment markedly reduced the ABA content of all varieties and caused an increase in zeatin content of Fina, Berolina, Univeta and Cosima. IAA and GA3 contents of the sprouts generally decreased.
