Reaction of 31 non-senescent sorghum genotypes against root and stalk rots at SMARC-USM [Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center-University of Southern Mindanao], Kabacan, Cotabato [Philippines]

Thirty-one non-senescent sorghum genotypes were screened against root and stalk rots at SMARC-USM [Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center-University of Southern Mindanao], Kabacan, Cotabato [Philippines]. Results show that genotypes PQ56,IS 2954, PQ74-1 and Q104 had significantly higher root rot infection (25%), 6.5 number of nodes crossed, rated 5 (completely dead) in leaf-plant death, and highest (75) number of poorly developed panicles when compared to the rest of the genotypes tested. These entries were, susceptible to root and stalk rots thus accounting for low yield. Among the resistant genotypes were Q101, Q102, Q103, E36-1, PQ60-2, SRV 86, BJ111, PQ76, and CSH 6 which had less percentage soft stalk, less number of nodes crossed, and low leaf-plant death. This study was part of the 1987 International Sorghum Root and Stalk Rot Nursery based at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics at Andhra Pradesh, India.
