Dela Cruz, A.B.
This study was conducted to (1) determine the different cropping patterns employed by the farmers in Camiling, Tarlac [Philippines], (2) determine the land and labor utilization schemes, (3) examine income associated with the different cropping patterns, and (4) determine the possible problems encountered by the farmers in multiple cropping patterns. Results of the study revealed that the cropping patterns employed by the farmers were rice-rice-vegetable; rice-rice-corn; rice-vegetable-rice; rice-vegetable-corn and rice-vegetable-rice corn. Of these cropping patterns mentioned, rice-vegetable-rice-corn and rice-rice-vegetable were commonly used. The average age of all the farmers was 48. The rice-vegetable-rice-corn cropping pattern had the youngest group of farmers, longer years of schooling with the least number of farming experience and least number of years operating present farm. Most of the farmers were owner operators and leaseholders. The average area operated by all the farmers was 1.84 hectares. Household size and educational attainment were significantly related to the adoption of cropping patterns, while age of the farmers have no significant relation in the adoption of cropping patterns. Rice-vegetable and rice-rice-corn had the highest land utilization index of 59% and the least was rice-vegetable-corn, 33%. Harvesting followed by planting and transplanting constituted the highest labor days while rice-vegetable-corn had the least labor days. High price of inputs and low price of produce were serious problems encountered by the farmers practicing multiple cropping followed by insect pest and diseases and natural calamities like typhoon and flood.
