The extent of chromosome pairing of four different octoploid triticale forms and initial wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivars was studied. Triticale 8x of various cross combinations significantly differed from one another by the number of univalents, conjugated arms and chiazma number per cell. It was found that PMCs of octoploid triticale at metaphase 1 of meiosis had 7.88 percent less chiasmata than their total number in the parental forms. No direct relationship was found between the extent of the chromosome pairing of the initial wheat and rye forms, on the one hand, and octoploid triticale, on the other. Differentiation observed between triticale 8x of various cross combinations probably resulted from interaction of the genotypes of the parental forms, i.e. from the intereffect of the genetic systems controlling the chromosome pairing of these two different species
