It was stated that hens from examined strains and hybrids producing white and brown eggs layed eggs significantly different in egg specific gravity. It was shown that white eggs were characterized by higher quality of egg shells (higher specific gravity, smaller number of cracked eggs) than brown eggs. High and significant phenotypic correlation coefficients were obtained between egg specific gravity and cracked eggs. No relationship was found between specific gravity of eggs and other examined traits. It allows to state that selection based on specific gravity of eggs may influence the improvement of egg quality and reduction of cracked eggs without unfavourable effect on other production traits
