An experiment on sugar beets, within a stationary trial, established back in 1965, was continued in the period from 1981 to 1985. The effect of individual types of fertilizer differed somewhat from the effect achieved in the previous period (1976-1980). Yield increases, when using only nitrogen, were less in this period in relation to the control than in the previous 5 years (by 4%), while the effect of phosphorus kept increasing. Fertilization with nitrogen had the greatest effect on the root and sugar yields, followed by phosphorus and then potassium. Nitrogen fertilization had the greatest effect on the yield of tops, the root to foliage ratio and the quantity of harmful nitrogen in roots. The use of all 3 elements is important for the root and sugar yield and sugar quality. The maximum root and sugar yields were achieved with a dose of 100 kg NPK/ha.
