Morphological characters of anthers in male sterile and fertile genotypes of sugarbeet

On the basis of the results concerning sugarbeets, it has been concluded that: fertile types differ visually from their cytoplasmically nuclear male sterile and nuclear male sterile analogues; cytoplasmically nuclear and nuclear male sterile genotypes have shorter anthers than their fertile analogues, while this difference has not been established with regard to the anther width; the colour, length and width of anthers are not reliable indicators of cytoplasmically nuclear male sterility.
