Stage I selection in sugar cane. A compromise
1988
Julien, I.W. (West Indies Central Sugar Cane Breeding Station, Groves (Barbados))
Selection in stage 1 was examined utilising 28 seedlings from each of 10 bi-parental families and a group of 28 Caribbean commercials. Stalk number, stalk diameter, stalk length, stool weight, stool volume and yield grade were analysed in plant and ratoon seedlings. Stalk number grade, stalk diameter grade and stalk length grade were analysed in ratoon seedlings. Estimates of the degree of genetic determination (DGD) were calculated for each character. Genetic and phenotypic correlations were calculated between characters. In addition, the average number of man seconds/seedling needed to determine each character was measured. The use of graded versus measured characters as selection criteria was discussed. It was concluded that graded characters would be more cost effective in seedling selection. The usefulness of brix as a selection criterion in the context of Caribbean variety selection programmes was discussed. It was concluded that brix should be maintained as a selection criterion in stage 1 but that the system of brix evaluation should be altered. Broad principles for seedling selection in the context of the Caribbean were obtained.
