Effect of solid waste extract of a chloralkali factory was studied on the growth of Westiellopsis prolifica Janet. Drastic depletion in growth rate than control value was marked at highest concentration of solid waste extract (i.e. 2.0 ml solid waste extract/100 ml nutrient medium). Beyond this concentration the algal cells were completely dead and did not revive. At sublethal concentrations the cells grew luxuriantly than control value and even at 2.0 ml solid waste extract/100 ml medium the culture cells were not completely killed. After 6th day of exposure they again revived. A negative correlation exists between growth rate and highest concentration of solid waste extract. Toxicity increases with increase in exposure period and also concentration of the toxicant. A partial recovery was marked when transferred to mercury free growth medium. Here low concentration, showing luxuriant growth, acts as a growth promoter and high concentration acts as growth retarder.
