Grasses of Bangladesh: an overview based on annotated specimens at the Central National Herbarium at Calcutta [India]

The paper gives a detailed enumeration of herbarium specimens of the grass flora of Bangladesh available in the Central National Herbarium. The present assessment shows that 425 species of grasses in 120 genera occur in Bangladesh. The important monotypic genera in Bangladesh are, Tragus, Thysanolaena, Vetiveria and Desmostachys, extending also in the mangrove ecosystem of Sunderbans. The grass flora also includes among others, the American species of the genera Panicum, Paspalum and Axonopus. Out of 65 species of Bambuseae, 13 species are found in Bangladesh. The tribe of oryzoid affinity mostly composed of the genera of low endemic value, are found in Bangladesh.
