Photosynthetic activities of two cowpea genotypes IT 82E60 and SSD (625) treated with different rhizobium species at vegetative and reproductive stages were evaluated. Plants of IT 82E60 with no inoculation showed the highest rates of photosynthesis (20.43 mol m(-2) s(-1)) leaf conductance (773 m mol m(-2) s(-1), transpiration (7.79 m mol (-1O) s(-1), water use efficiency (41.79 mol m mol(-1) and leaf chlorophyll content (41.49) followed by the same genotypes treated with groundnut specific rhizobium. At the reproductive stage, however, SSD 65 with soybean specific rhizobium gave the highest rates of photosynthetic components. In terms of photosynthesis and yield production, inoculation of IT82 E60 with groundnut specific rhizobium showed promise.
